The Africa-Arab Platform for DRR in Tunisia provided a favourable framework for sharing experiences between participants and representatives of African CSOs engaged in community-based disaster risk management. There were also opportunities to advocate for the inclusion of community-based risk management as a response in the implementation of the regional disaster risk reduction strategy. As a result, the African CBDRM local leadership forum took place in parallel with this regional platform, bringing together local leaders who have promoted sustainable CBDRM in their respective communities to share their stories.  It aimed to strengthen the contribution of civil society to the process of implementing the regional DRR strategy. As such, it presented innovative initiatives that have gained community support and ownership and have been adopted by local communities as sustainable solutions.

The event highlighted the importance of listening to the local communities and putting them first when engaging in community-based DRM projects in order to ensure local ownership. There were also conversations surrounding the need to legal frameworks in order to build on existing DRM tools.
